Dominic Prince – my husband. He’s a journalist, too; he makes documentaries (The Last Waterloo Cup, BBC 2005 with director Paul Yule, an amazing, moving film.) He writes in the national papers about business, the countryside, the ‘turf’’ (i.e. horseracing industry.) His ‘frugal’ nature is an inspiration. He is a stalwart brewer of meat stock, and enthusiastic consumer of cheap cuts, like pigs trotters which he adds to beef stews, and oxtail. He makes stores of windfall apple puree for our breakfast and is an eager fan of road kill although we only let him bring certain specimens in to the house.
Jack Prince – my son, 12. Loves football, plays midfield and is terrific at it. He talks about little else, and reads all the sports pages. Hates the way his mum goes on about food in the same way that she can’t stand the way he bangs on about football. He loves roasts, pizzas and fish and chips. Has recently agreed to eat tomato sauce after a three-year boycott of any salsa not crafted by Italian women. Jack, like most children, has his foibles.
Lara Prince – my daughter, 9. A future farmer who thinks about ponies a lot of the time (particularly Maisie) and loves riding. She is in charge of the herbs in the garden; is a precocious cook and a courageous eater that recently swallowed her first oyster. She has asked me not to say too much more.
Maria Taylor – secret weapon. Our Cook, Eat days assistant child minder
